That Guy Fawkes was actually a Christian fundamentalist and only wanted to destroy the British government to replace it with the Vatican. He fought for the Spanish Catholics and probably wanted a Britain that resembled an anarchist’s nightmare.

Seriously, he has more to do with Glenn Beck than any Anonymous movement. Just because a comic book writer (who - while kinda cool - thinks he’s actually a magician) made him trendy and cool doesn’t mean his legacy has suddenly changed.

Choose a better piece of iconography, Internet. You’re meant to be the smart ones.

I understand where you are coming from, however I’d like to point out how ultimatly the Guy Fawkes mask is a symbol and although it’s got an origin that is different than the meaning it’s being used for here, that doesn’t change that people know what it means when used today. If I see a Guy Fawkes mask somewhere today, what crosses my mind is not the actual man or what he did, but instead what the symbol is meant to acheive. And that is what most people think of when they see it. Which is why it gets used. If everyone saw it as meaning the actions of the man, Guy Fawkes, it would not be used as a symbol for revolution. But because when the majority of people see it, they relate it to revolution, that is what it means and that is what it’s used for.

^^^ This this this a thousand times. I was going to write something almost exactly like that but I saw this and decided to reblog instead. The symbol is not the man. The symbol is revolution and anarchy and the people.

But the mask is not a Guy Fawkes mask, it is a V for Vendetta mask - V representing anarchy and the toppling of oppression. V himself chose the Guy Fawkes mask as a symbol because his first act (in the book) was the destruction of the houses of parliament which was Fawkes’ original intent. The character himself chose it as a symbol, not as an endorsement of Fawkes. V was never trying to emulate Fawkes’ motives, but he knew the power of symbols - and that is why this particular mask (not any other Fawkes mask, none of which look like this) is so appropriate today.

This Is All Kind Of Wrong of the Day: Kymberly Wimberly was all set to become her Arkansas school’s first black valedictorian since 1989.

But, at the last minute, McGehee High School decided Kymberly was to share her spotlight with a white “co-valedictorian” who had a lower GPA.

“When I found out I was valedictorian, I was ecstatic,” Kymberly, who has long dreamt of being at the top of her class, told ABC News. She says the student named co-valedictorian agreed with her that “if the tables were turned, there wouldn’t be a co-valedictorian.”

Kymberly’s mom, Molly Bratton, who is the school’s “certified media specialist,” says she overheard school personnel expressing concern that naming Kymberly valedictorian would cause a “big mess.” Furthermore, when Bratton tried to protest the school’s move at a school board meeting, she was told she couldn’t speak because she had “filled out the wrong form” and would have to wait until after graduation to appeal.

Kymberly and Bratton have filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the school, seeking punitive damages and a revision of the school records naming Kymberly the sole valedictorian.
